Religious elders play a crucial role in our communities. Continuing our conversations with different segments of society, today I met with members of the Holy Synod of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, who journeyed from across the country to meet with us for these discussions. Inaugural Ceremony Of Women Rehab, Skill Dev’t Center

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) and First Lady Zinash Tayachew presided over the inauguration of ‘LENEGEWA’, a groundbreaking center in Addis Ababa designed to uplift women facing social and economic difficulties.

Offering a range of services from psychological support and medical care to professional training, the center is set to create new employment pathways and foster empowerment for women in the community.

AU Executive Council Convenes its 22nd Extraordinary Meeting

Addis Ababa hosts the 22nd Extraordinary Session of the African Union Executive Council, a pivotal gathering focusing on the upcoming election of the senior leadership of the Union, set for February 2025.

This session is particularly significant as it reviews a comprehensive report of the Permanent Representative Committee of the AU on the preparations leading up to this crucial election.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Mohamed Salem Ould, Foreign Minister of Mauritania and Chairperson of the Executive Council, emphasized the importance of the forthcoming election.

In his remarks at the meeting, H.E. Amb. Taye Atske- Selassie, Foreign Minister of Ethiopia, emphasized the importance of ensuring the election to the senior leadership posts of the commission to be conducted with the objective of upholding the union’s integrity and adhering to the established guiding principles and rules while also employing a pragmatic approach to ensure the smooth functioning of the institution.

He also underscored the need to keep the unity among African countries for maintaining the continent’s cohesion and strengthening of the Commission.

This gathering in Addis Ababa marks a critical step toward strengthening Africa’s role in global affairs and ensuring a stable and prosperous future for the continent.

President Receives Letters of Credential of Seventeen Ambassadors

President Sahle-Work Zewde received letters of credential of Seventeen newly-appointed ambassadors to Ethiopia, at the Office of the President.

The Republic of Equatorial Guinea, the State of Qatar, Japan, the Republic of Azerbaijan, Spain, the Republic of Korea, the Republic of Liberia, Sierra Leone, the Republic of Malawi, the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Kenya, The Republic of Mali, the Republic of India, the Republic of South Sudan, the Republic of Botswana, the Republic of Cabo Verde and Jamaica were the countries whose ambassadors presented their letters of credential to H.E. President Sahle-Work Zewde.

While presenting their letters of credential, the newly appointed ambassadors pledged to diligently enhance their relations with Ethiopia across various domains including culture, people-to-people interactions, trade, investment, tourism, and politics.

In response, President Sahle-Work reaffirmed Ethiopia’s support  to  the  ambassadors  during  their mission in Ethiopia.

Speaking to the media, Ambassador Birtukan Ayano, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, highlighted that some 134 countries have established embassies in Addis Ababa to date.

Stating that the number of countries opening and interested in opening their embassies in the capital is increasing, the State Minister said that this trend underscores Addis Ababa’s enduring status as a diplomatic nucleus.

She said that by increasing the international competitiveness of the city and efficiently fulfilling the responsibilities expected of Ethiopia as a country, work will be done to ensure that the country becomes global diplomatic epicenter.

Bilateral Meetings: In the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Foreign Minister Taye Atske-Selassie, met with Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Rwanda, H.E. Vincent Biruta and discussed bilateral and regional issues.

Algeria:

The FDRE Foreign Minister Ambassador Taye Atske- Selassie met with Ahmed Attaf, Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad of Algeria in Addis Ababa.

The two exchanged views on bolstering bilateral relations of the two sisterly countries and enhancing their cooperation on issues of mutual interests.

Kenya:

Foreign Minister, H.E. Ambassador Taye Atske- Selassie received the Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs of Kenya, H.E. Dr. Musalia Mudavadi, at his office. The two officials discussed bilateral and regional issues of common interest.

US Special Envoy for Sudan.

Foreign Minister, H.E. Taye Astke- Selassie received and held discussions with the US Special Envoy to the Sudan, H.E. Tom Perriello, at his office. The two sides discussed current situation in the Sudan and issues of mutual concern.

During their discussion the special envoy expressed US’s deep concerns over the ongoing fighting in the Sudan.

Foreign Minister Taye, on his part, spoke at length about Ethiopia’s efforts to put an end to the conflict in Sudan. Ambassador Taye also recalled efforts that Prime Minister, H.E. Abiy Ahmed made to bring the two warring parties to a negotiating table and resolve their differences peacefully.

Both parties agreed to continue working together in bringing a lasting peace in the Sudan.

Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada

Foreign Minister Taye Atske-Selassie received and discussed with Robert Oliphant, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada.

Ambassador Taye appreciated Canada’s support in difficult times and the importance of scaling up the longstanding and multi-sectoral bilateral relations.

Ambassador Taye also expressed the need to enhance trade and investment relations between the two countries and called for Canadian Business people to invest in the digital sector, mining, energy and manufacturing sectors.

The Honorable Robert Oliphant on his part stated that Ethiopia is one of the prioritized African countries in Canada’s foreign relations.

The Honorable Robert Oliphant also expressed Canada’s keenness to enhance its relations with Ethiopia in trade, investment, humanitarian assistance, development cooperation and other fields.

The discussions also covered regional, continental and international issues of mutual importance.

China:

Chinese Ambassador to Ethiopia, Zhao Zhiyuan, held discussions with Foreign Affairs Minister of Ethiopia, Ambassador Taye Atske Selassie on how to bolster the bilateral ties between the two countries.

The two exchanged views on ongoing multifaceted partnership between the two countries the Ambassador described as practical cooperation in various fields.

Ambassador Zhao Zhiyuan said in a social media post: “It is believed that China-Ethiopia all-weather strategic partnership will be further enriched.”

In October last year, China and Ethiopia announced that their partnership had transformed from Comprehensive and Enduring Strategic Cooperative Partnership to an ‘All Weather Strategic Cooperation Partnership’.

Ministry Bids Farewell to Ato Demeke Mekonnen

Former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Demeke Mekonnen thanked staff and leaders of the Ministry for their significant contribution during his leadership.

In his speech at the farewell program, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Taye Atske-Selassie, said that the leadership experience of Ato Demeke was exceptional.

He also said that he will continue on strengthening the good works that he had started in the Ministry during his tenure.

Ethiopia, Pakistan Vow To Enhance Multifaceted Ties

The Standing Committee on Foreign Relations and Peace Affairs of the House of People’s Representatives of Ethiopia stressed the need to foster multifaceted ties with Pakistan.

The Standing Committee held discussion with Ambassador of Pakistan to Ethiopia, Atif Sharif, on ways of enhancing comprehensive relations between the two countries.

Chairman of the Standing Committee, Dima Nogo (PhD) has described the bilateral relations between Ethiopia and Pakistan as historical and longstanding.

The two sides underscored the need to ensure mutual economic benefits by strengthen the ties between the two countries in areas of trade, health, investment, culture and technology transfer.

Ambassador Atif Sharif affirmed commitment of his country to strengthen partnership with Ethiopia in trade, investment, education, culture, tourism and diplomacy, among others.

He mentioned that Pakistani investors and intellectuals are working extensively in the fields, among others, education, health and investment development in Ethiopia.

The Ambassador invited the representatives of the two houses of Ethiopia to visit Pakistan and hold experience sharing with parliamentarians of his country.
