PM Abiy Ahmed Calls for Enhanced South- South Economic Cooperation
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has expressed gratitude to Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi for convening the inaugural Leader’s Session of the 2nd Voice of Global South Summit.
The Prime Minister shared the importance of deepening cooperation, speaking with one voice, promoting an increased role in global economic affairs, and capitalizing on innovation and artificial intelligence among Global South countries.
“Considering our vast resources and shared development goals, the Global South holds immense potential for enhancing South-South economic cooperation,” the Prime Minister added.
PM Abiy Ahmed Presides over House’s 3rd Year 4th Regular Session
The House of Peoples Representatives is holding its 3rd year the regular session in attendance of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD).
The Prime Minister will be responding to the queries from the parliamentarians regarding the 2023/2024 work plan of the federal government that was presented by President Sahle-Work Zewde during previous meeting.
Hearing the inquiries from the parliamentarians and respective responses from the Prime Minister, the house is expected to pass the motion. Religious leaders, representatives of contending political parties, Addis Ababa based diplomats and guests are also in attendance of the session.
PM Abiy Ahmed Receives Gen Abdelfattah Al- Burhan
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) received at Bole International Airport General Abdelfattah Al-Burhan, President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council of the Republic of the Sudan.
The two sides later exchanged views on current issues of mutual interest at the Office of the Prime Minister. “On November 15, 2023.
‟ I have welcomed to Ethiopia General Abdelfattah Al -Burhan, President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council of the Republic of the Sudan for discussions on key current issues,” the Prime Minister said.
Reliance On Foreign Manufacturers Threatens Africa’s Development: President
In her opening remarks at the African Economic Conference, President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Sahle-Work Zewde, called on African leaders to redouble efforts for a robust industrial sector that can withstand external shocks.
She also stressed that reliance on foreign manufacturers threatens Africa’s development.
“There is a need to change the narrative on Africa’s industrialization for inclusive and sustainable industrial development – No one should be left behind in the making and sharing of resources” the President stressed. President Sahle-Work underscored that Africa must tackle climate change, political instability and conflict, which can be destructive for economic growth and human capital and threatens economic and social development.
President Sahle-Work Receives Chairperson of UN Peace building Commission
The President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia Sahle-Work Zewde received members of the UN Peace Building Commission who are in Ethiopia for the joint African Union-UN meeting this week.
The President, while congratulating the delegation, emphasized that there won‟t be sustainable peace without conflict prevention and breaking the vicious circle of fighting, killing and destruction.
Referring to her own experience, she added peace building has to be inclusive and addressing needs of communities.
For his part, the Chair of the UN Peace building Commission, Ivan Simonovic, briefed on the work, challenges, and plans of the Commission.
The 6th informal consultative meeting of UN Peace building Commission and the African Union Commission Department of Political Affairs Peace and Security (AUC PAPS) is being held in Addis Ababa this week where participants called for impactful collaboration between the two bodies, building on „A New Agenda for Peace‟, and revised AU Post-Conflict Reconstruction & Development Policy.
Republic of Korea Vows to Deepen Development
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Demeke Mekonnen, held a discussion with Chang Wonsam, President of the Republic of Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), in his office today.
In the discussion that focused on existing historical and bilateral relations between Ethiopia and the Republic of South Korea, Demeke noted the ever-growing relations between the two countries and called for the development of bilateral relations in various fields.
Demeke appreciated the Korean experience on sustainable development, and he indicated that Ethiopia is keen on learning from the Korean experience.
On his side, Chang Wonsam said that Ethiopia is one of the Korean Government’s largest priority partner countries. He said KOICA is currently implementing 18 projects and three training programs in Ethiopia.
Chang Wonsam also indicated that his country will give priority to its historical relations with Ethiopia for further cooperation in areas of sustainable development as well as in international forums.
Ethiopia Reiterated Continued Support To South Sudan’s Effort to Uphold Peace and Stability
Ethiopia will continue supporting South Sudan in its Effort to uphold peace and stability in the country, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Demeke Mekonnen, reiterated.
DPM & FM Demeke reaffirmed his country’s commitment during a discussion with the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General to South Sudan and Head of the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), Nicholas Haysom at his office today.
The discussion emphasized the significance of Ethiopia’s role in fostering peace and stability in South Sudan.
Ethiopia has been actively engaged in supporting the peace process in South Sudan, said Demeke, further expressing Ethiopia‟ commitments to continue supporting South Sudan in its effort to uphold peace and stability in the country and conduct the election according to schedule.
It is crucial to acknowledge the significance of international collaboration in facilitating the implementation of peace agreements. The discussion between the Deputy Prime Minister and the UN Special Representative demonstrates the commitment of both parties to furthering the peace process in South Sudan.
Chinese Companies Share Experiences with Regional Presidents of Ethiopia
The Ethiopia high-level delegation of regional presidents led by Vice President of the ruling Prosperity Party (PP) has toured various companies in Shanghai, China.
Among others, the Ethiopian high-level delegation visited a solid waste treatment recycling plant and urban planning and designing center of shanghai city.
In addition, the delegation paid a visit to Chinese Artificial Intelligence Institute and Huawei Technologies Solution Center in Shanghai.
The visit aimed at sharing experiences in planning and implementation of urban development strategies in Chinese cities.
Regional leaders exchanged views with company representatives on how clear urban strategies are crucial to realize model cities convenient for their residents if planned, implemented and evaluated in a more established manner.
Furthermore, the delegation discussed with representatives of the respective Chinese companies on how to customize the lessons attained to the Ethiopian urban development climate thereby fostering cooperation among the two countries in this sector.
Shimelis Abdisa, Arega Kebede, Mustafa Mohammed, Hajo Awol Arba and Desta Ledamo, who are Presidents of Oromia, Amhara, Somalia, Afar and Sidama regional states respectively are among the members of the Ethiopian delegation to China led by Vice President of the Prosperity Party, Adem Farah.
Ethiopia Launches REDD + Investment Program Phase II
The REDD+ Investment Program phase II which is part of Ethiopia’s forestry Development has been launched in the presence of high level government officials, members of the diplomatic community and representatives of partner organizations.
During the launching program, the Agriculture Minister of Ethiopia, Girma Amente (PhD) stated that forests are source of food, wood, fodder and herbal medicine among the community.
Ethiopia is one of the five countries in Africa and among the 25 countries in the world known for their biological diversity and the country‟s forest resources are home to diverse plants and wildlife, he said.
“Our forest ecosystems are the sources of freshwater that they control floods, prevent soil erosion and reduce sedimentation on dams and regulate climatic condition,” he said.
The minister added that Ethiopia is protecting biodiversity-rich forests, restoring degraded lands and introducing innovations and best practices aimed at transforming the forestry sector.
“Norway‟s support is aligned to Ethiopia‟s policy aimed at increasing the resilience of vulnerable communities to the negative effects of climate change, reducing carbon emissions and addressing deforestation and forest degradation.
Mubarek Eliyas, member of the House of Peoples Representatives and Chairperson of the Agriculture Standing Committee of the parliament, on his part said that the government of Ethiopia has shown its determination to mitigate climate change and control environmental degradations.
He added that Ethiopia has put in place policies and strategies to maintain forests with the help of sustainable management and restore degraded landscapes and the ecosystem.
On the launching program, achievements on the first phase of the REDD+ investment program were appraised.
China Says Ready to Work with Ethiopia In Maintaining Peace In Horn of Africa
Speaker of the House of Federation of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Agegnehu Teshager held discussion with a Chinese delegation led by Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of National People‟s Congress, Losang Gyaltsen.
In his remarks at the meeting, the Upper House Speaker, Agegnehu Teshager, stated that China and Ethiopia have been enjoying a long and fruitful bilateral cooperation since they established their diplomatic relationship in 1970.
China is ready to work with Ethiopia to further strengthen cooperation on bilateral, international and regional issues, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of National People‟s Congress, Losang Gyaltsen said.
The bilateral ties between the two countries has transformed into a strategic partnership, he said.
China has been supporting in areas of school feeding, river-side development, and free scholarship apart from participation of Chinese companies in mega projects and huge investment sectors in Ethiopia, according to the Speaker. In this regard, the Speaker added that Ethiopia has drawn productive lessons from China, and implementing them in propelling its development.
Chinese companies‟ presence and participation in Ethiopia is testimony how the nation has become a chosen investment destination, Agegnehu said.
Head of the Chinese delegation, Losang Gyaltsen, for his part, said the bilateral cooperation between Ethiopia and China is flourishing in the areas of trade, investment, culture, politics and diplomacy.
Losang Gyaltsen reaffirmed China‟s commitment and readiness to support Ethiopia‟s initiatives in fighting terrorism, and maintaining peace and stability in the Horn of Africa region.
The Chinese delegation is expected to have meetings with high government officials of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in the coming days.
