In the presence of more than 150 Ethiopians and persons of Ethiopian descent, as well as Embassy staffs, the FDRE Embassy in Djibouti commemorated the 46th International Women’s Day with this year’s national theme “I am my sister’s keeper.”

During the opening speech, the FDRE Ambassador to Djibouti, H.E. Berhanu Tsegaye, praised the Ethiopian women diaspora community in Djibouti for their commitment to assisting displaced people in Ethiopia; he thanked them for their contributions thus far, including purchasing bonds for the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam and taking the lead in any national call.

The Ambassador stated that Djibouti, which is home to a large number of Ethiopian women, should seize this opportunity to encourage women to continue to support their country in whatever manner they can. He notably urged women to take the lead in fundraising for the success of the Ethiopian Community School, citing the building’s recent design handover.

Furthermore, a panel discussion was organized to examine the significance of International Women’s Day, the dangers of migration through Djibouti, the challenges and opportunities for women in Djibouti, and potential solutions.

Coordinators were also chosen to prepare the way for the establishment of an Ethiopian women’s association in Djibouti.
